I never get tired of angels and I’m especially fond of the classical paintings. I think the halos are really cool with a spiritual vibe. This angel is a detail from the Pala dei Linaioli by Fra Angelico in Florence, Italy.

As in life, it’s not just angels and roses. This detail from Signorelli’s “Last Judgment” clearly depicts the presence of demons. Artists of that period depicted them with bat-like wings, a far cry from the feathery wings of good angels. This painting resides in Florence at Scala.

Here’s a detail from the famous painting “The Annunciation” by Fra Angelico circa 1438-45. I’d say this pretty much qualifies for public domain material and as always, click on the image for the full size. This is the usual convention for painting angels since no one has ever seen them we assume they look like this and usually wear robes. In 1459, Benozzo Gozzoli painted this for the chapel of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence.
