I think these are birch trees even though they might be aspen. Anyway, they are lovely and come from an old newspaper clipping with no date. The advertising on the flip side has a cafeteria ad and the blue plate special is an Italian spaghetti and meatball dinner with garlic toast for 74 cents. So, this image is most likely not in the public domain even though there is no artist’s signature. The newspaper probably owns the rights but I did eliminate the squirrel that formerly occupied the blank space in front. Use at your own risk.

It seems that Toonces the driving cat from Saturday Night Live is not the first cat to get behind the wheel. These cats look like their on their way to getting liquored up on the way to the dance hall.

This image depicts the accession to the throne of the Capetians. From the left, Hugh Capet, Robert, and Constance, restored Paris to become the center of power. Hugh was crowned king in 987.

Here’s a pin-up girl from a 1948 Esquire calendar. This is Miss December and I’m not quite sure why December is associated with the circus. Maybe all that mad shopping invokes the mayhem of the circus.

Mechanix Illustrated Pin Up Girl

Mechanix Illustrated was originally published by Fawcett Publications with CBS now owning some of the copyrights. So far, I’ve only found 2 issues from 1959 that have renewed copyrights (not this issue) so use this image at your own risk. Many copyrights prior to 1963 have expired and if not renewed within 28 years, fell into the public domain. I’m still checking on Mechanix Illustrated as I have quite a few issues.

I think it’s cool how archangels are depicted as either gender depending on the artist’s view. Many years ago angels would show up in my dreams and they had enormous wingspans, taking up the entire room. There are so many paintings and drawings of angels it’s hard to say if they really are huge or our mind tells us so because of how they are depicted. In the Bible whenever angels appear they always say “do not be afraid” so maybe they are larger than life!

I never get tired of angels and I’m especially fond of the classical paintings. I think the halos are really cool with a spiritual vibe. This angel is a detail from the Pala dei Linaioli by Fra Angelico in Florence, Italy.
