Back in the day drop caps known as vignettes were quite popular. You can make your own from just about any graphic that can be sized down without blurring too much of the detail. Here I’ve used the initial T since it’s the most commonly used letter. Simply insert the image with the “left” attribute if you want your text to format to the right . Depending on your theme, you might have a border around all your images which can be removed by altering your CSS stylesheet.

These four women were painted by Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) in Paris.

This portrait of Auguste-Gabriel Godefroy was painted by Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin (1699-1779) circa 1741. A version of this painting is in the Louvre.

If you were a kid in the 1700s it’s unlikely that you would have your portrait painted unless, of course, you were the the Duke of Berry and the Count of Provence. Mom and Dad most likely paid some major bucks for this work of art. These children were painted by Francois-Hubert Drouais (1727-1775) of Paris.
